Claro walnut is found in Western United States, principally in Northern California. It is actually a hybrid, created by grafting English walnut (juglans regina) onto a stock of American (juglans nigra) or Californian (juglans hindsii) walnut. The result is a variegated wood with marble-like dark brown and tan swirls.

The pterocarpus indicus tree grows extensively in South East Asia. It is called amboyna after the area in Indonesia where it was first harvested. It is also the national tree of the Philippines where it is known as a narra tree. Although the tree is plentiful, the burl is very rare and expensive. It has rich, warm, almost honeyed, brown figuring and exquisite variegation.
